The Frozen Wastes

I hit 80, standing next to my good friend Bakerboy. What does a young warrior do before attempting heroic dungeons? Before installing any addons besides map/quest helpers? He accepts an invite from an old Call of Duty player I knew, to Naxxramas, to tackle Kel'thuzad with 24 others!

From questing solo and doing the odd dungeon, I think it's safe to say Kel'thuzad was beyond me. We failed 3-4 times and I was contributing nothing (the first try I released... not knowing raids are different). One more try and a wonderful red circle appeared around me... "that's a cool effect"... pop.

They opted to continue without me. Which I was happy with :)

I took the usual route of tackling more appropriate challenges before joining Wasted Youth, some time after the gates to the titan city of Ulduar were opened.

We only tackled some of the earlier bosses before Trial of the Crusader was released. Regardless of level, Ulduar obviously blew away the Crusader's Colloseum - Ulduar had a greater challenge, a fun side, and was set in the most beautiful and grand surroundings.

The guild I was in were good fun - a core of some friends/family, but some totally unprepared people (no food, reagents etc). ICC was a struggle, so I started looking around (and most of WY went horde/left).

My friend Mortasfan suggested Dragon Legion. I knew I was below your level, but I wanted to give it a shot. We both applied, and my friend whispered me... "you should join DL". Sadly that was him telling me he'd been knocked back, and I'd been accepted.

For the Legion

So I joined DL. Whispered Mr Sekac, and got that guild invite (screenshotted). First raid in ICC: This is more like it! 25 people here to do some damage!

Raids were serious, but fun. Precisely what I wanted from the game.

ICC was obviously a far greater experience than TOTC and, with no disrespect to other guilds I'd played with, I was in a real progression guild.

I learnt to play the game, I offered tactical insight, I killed all that Northrend had to offer :-)

There was one final challenge, of course. Defeat Algalon in Ulduar gear. I'd only ever fought him in a raid full of higher geared players and, while I stayed 80 to get out of the MMO gear grind, I soon set a target to defeat him in appropriate gear.

This was a long, fruitless journey, but started gaining some momentum a few months ago. I found a guild who had completed it post-Cataclysm - the only problem being changing realm and faction to do it with them (and offering them an incentive to help me).

Thanks to them for all their help, but after a few weeks he pointed out one great piece of news: 4.3.2 had been announced, and cross-realm raiding.

So I set up a thread, found my team, played hardball to get one or two to perfect the composition, and we went in search of Algalon the Observer:

Translocation complete. Commencing planetary analysis of Azeroth.

Stand back mortals. I am not here to fight you.

It is in the universe's best interest to re-originate this planet, should my analysis find systemic corruption. Do not interfere.

Your actions are illogical. All possible results for this encounter have been calculated. The pantheon will receive the observer's message regardless of outcome.

I've seen worlds bathed in The Makers flames. Their their denizens fading without so much as whimper. Entire planetary systems born and raised in the time it takes your mortal hearts to beat once. Yet all throughout, my own heart, devoid of emotion of empathy, I have felt.... NOTHING. A million, million lives wasted. Had they all held within them your tenacity, had they all loved life as you do...

Perhaps it is your imperfection, that which grants you free will, that allows you to persevere over all cosmically calculated odds. You prevailed where the Titan's own perfect creations have failed.

I've re-arranged the reply code, your planet will be spared. I can't be certain about my own calculations any more.

It wasn't a purist run (impossible of course with stat/talent changes), but I set myself one goal in WoW, and I got it. I've enjoyed being a virtual hero, and making some fantastic friends in Dragon Legion.

These last 4-5 days it was kind of a problem trying to visit the forums, or use TS.
The server has some kind of hardware problem (couldn't find anything in the logs), which caused it to shutdown or simply crash very frequently.

So, even though that server didn't cost me any money, I don't think it's acceptable that these forums and TS are down so much.
That's why I decided to buy a VPS (Virtual Private Server) again, but cheaper than the one I had before.
This one is 15 euros each month, which is still more expensive compared to shared hosting, but is a LOT more configurable, stable and faster.

Yesterday I installed and prepared the server, I used most of my evening to actually move everything over from the "old" one and fix a couple of problems.

But, everything is working fine again and the performance is excellent, so enjoy!

From noob...

I remember getting WoW trial activated - December 2008 it was. Straight away I chose my hero, a warrior - human of course, and didn't really pay much attention to customising his looks. For the name I wasn't sure if my old moniker of Aristos suited this environment, so I needed something a little more.. medieval. And so Ariskovar was born.

Early queries to my experienced WoW friends:

So, let's get this straight. I don't actually need any skill to kill stuff - I just press a button or two repeatedly until they're dead?

Why 'gz on ding'? What? Oh, the yellow flash.

(after trying to run past some level 5(?) defias bandits) I killed my character. Do I need to get a new one? Oh, nvm - I'm alive again :D

Wow, you're killing them with 1 hit! (to my friend's 20ish pally killing Kobolds)

I blame my extreme noobiness on the fact that I must’ve cancelled the new player guide tips. So bad was it fumbling in this massive world with a huge UI, that I actually put armor on my action bars. Awesome :’(

I wonder what my buddy thought when he inevitably inspected me :)

Straight from the get-go, I was an explorer. Most of my questions to friends were related to getting places. I actually printed out maps of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor with their respective horde/ally flight points, to help me cope with this huge planet of Azeroth. I remember crossing the Nazferiti river to Duskwood, and seeing spiders with lots and lots of health, and a weird question mark icon next to them (later graphics setting change helped me see it's a skull :)).

Those first days were absolutely fantastic though. I remember getting to Stormwind, and realising that's where it all happens for the '80s'. Seeing people with titles – “Champion of the Frozen Wastes” and “Salty” – and thinking I’d never be able to do all those end-game things. Walking in and around Ironforge and developing a craving to pull out Lord of the Rings. Taking the tram for the first time, and then the amazing flight point over scary territory - lava spiders with 4 thousand health! Wow.

I remember once swimming from Westfall to Booty Bay as a level 12 or so. I have a screenshot where I saw a ‘skull’ hordey on Yojamba Isle. I hid, and hid well. :ashamed: Ah yes, the life of an explorer. To be honest, Azeroth, the world within, and the community that it holds is still something quite impressive.

...to leveller...

I still explored, but started levelling better. Duskwood was was so eerie, and that 'contested territory' helped add to the edge of the place. I totally loved it, and knew that I'd eventually kill that Mor'Ladim guy who wanders about keeping me on my toes (and he's got nice lore, albeit tragic behind him).

I still remember a weird occurrence where the Leader of the Night Watch was suddenly marked 'res' and hostile to me and she basically one-shotted me. I think it was during Stiches roaming, but still not sure why. Possibly a bug, but I might've I attacked a neutral or even a horde priest mind-controlled her (if that’s possible).

The levelling slowed a little in Darkshore though - struggled for quests in the mid to late 20s, and I can say that reaching the milestone of my first mount was certainly overdue.

Pushed onward and upward, with some notable dungeons on the route to Northrend. I remember 3-manning Uldaman in a crazy late night effort – I think it took us about 4 hours. I was almost asleep for the last hour of it, but you just can’t stop can you? How stupid and trivial that was – and an annoyed gf for nothing :bad:

Next up was a boost in Blackrock Depths (still an amazing place – anyone run this without going on the throne?) and then it’s the next big milestone – the Dark Portal.

...to Outland and the Frozen Wastes.

It felt like I was that little adventurer all over again. All these Fel soldiers coming to meet me, swarms of troops heading in and out of Honor Hold, and that fantastically ferocious Hellfire Peninsula landscape. Starting to learn my class, I reworked my talents a couple of times before arriving in the Frozen Wastes. I’d been to Valiance Keep before just out of curiosity, and it’s wasn’t that memorable for me. The boat to Howling Fjord however, was much more impressive – that burning boat above you is a fine photo opportunity ;)

I obviously rattled through levels 68-70, watching my killing potential get upgraded rapidly with each quest and dungeon reward before hitting level 70 and a half to 71 or so. At this point, I totally hit a brick wall. Perhaps caused by going from the rapid 68-70 process, but oh my goodness, Northrend XP requirements made me vow that this would be my only 80... if I even made it there myself.

---

brb – we got WG, need to do 4 VoA o_O
................. :lies:

I started another blog post about how my WoW addiction grew, but ended up thinking of how it all began instead. So, here is my gaming autobiography, and a whistle-stop tour of the titles I've played up til now

From the amazing blitter to a 3D world

A fairly average gamer, playing Amiga games such as Mega-lo-mania, which I still remember fondly, and Sim City, I eventually migrated to the PC. No games made enough of an impression for me to recall here - the standout one was Quake. I'd played Doom II, and it was fun - simple stuff, but also so expandable. Still amazed at how far some people took custom maps, which were effectively 2D. However, Quake was a whole new dimension. Literally.

Big blocky 3D graphics compared to my current PC and modern games, but I still remember that step - this is a whole 3D world. With physics. GLQuake and those famed Voodoo 3D cards made for super-slickness, and Quake 2 was an evolutionary step. LAN games galore, and I remember many times where a demo of a Q2 CTF match could easily have been close to Hollywood drama - taking out people with the railgun, and abusing rocket splash damage to great effect. My LAN games had pretty much died by Q3A's arrival - had a few, which I loved. I still think it's one of the finest PvP challenges one can have. Level playing field, and very, very slick.

Tactical shooters and the birth of Ar!stos.

Another milestone was me moving to the Call of Duty series. Spotted some workmates playing what turned out to be CoDUO, and I eventually joined in. Quite a learning curve playing free-for-all with people who knew the game, but I eventually got there. I was 'AlphaPaolo' in this days, and from the lowly depths of wondering how 'DDBK' was cheating to get on the MG roof in Carentan, to topping the scores (happy ending of course) it was a good journey. COD2 was ok too, and after playing on and off with other workmates online, I found the 'OMG Clan' server. They had a realism mod which brought back some CODUO stuff I missed, but kept the COD2 goodies I liked.

After everyone at work copied my name 'AlphaYournamehere', I had to find a new name. 'AlphaPaolo' was a bit bold - like I'm the alpha male, so it hand to be something more humble, and ideally contain a letter I could replace with a symbol. I trawled literature, deities from modern day and ancient history, before eventually finding my new name, 'Aristos', Greek for 'best', and the 'i' dropped to make it Ar!stos.

Gaming clans and a stupid game demo

I put my new name to good use, actually joining the 'OMG Clan'. Was a good choice - met some good people there, and had some fine matches, even though most people were moving on to COD4. The COD2 scene was isolated though, and we eventually parted ways. I continued playing, although a few COD2 friends were playing WoW. And, as I always said on xfire, "wowsux".

I bought a new ATi graphics card one day, installed it, and the bitch-ass drivers installed a WoW demo. Ok, I know WoW sucks and I'm not going to pay to play a game, but might as well give it a try seen as it's on my PC now.
