View Full Version : Wow & MacBook Pro 17"

I've decided to go for a MacBook Pro 17" - 3GHz cpu & 8Gb RAM.
Anyone tried playing WoW on such a machine and can share experience?
I know the Alienware machines are wicked for gaming, but this won't be bought primarily for gaming, and the new sexy graphics (http://www.apple.com/sg/macbookpro/graphics.html) on the 17" should be more then sufficient to play WoW decently (read: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics processors)
Cheers!

I was cosidering the M15X and M17X, but I decided to get the mac because of OSX and the sexy look'n feel, plus the Alienware macines are so massive. Ideally I'd like an 17-inch display, but the M17x seems like a beast and I'd like to havie it on my lap in the couch every now and then. The M15X seemed much lighter then the M17X, but still only a 15".
I also decided to get a Time Capsule 2Gb (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC344LL/A/Time-Capsule-2TB?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MTMzNzk4ODQ) while I was at it :P
I'll share my experiences with WoW on it when it's ready

Any mildly recent computer can run WoW, regardless of operating system (meaning, Windows, OS X or Linux )
I used to play on a Dell D600. Now I play on a Lenovo T400.

I'm currently using a 15" Macbook pro, i obviously didn't buy it to play WoW on but I haven't had any troubles with it with regards to the game.
This (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=4028094861&sid=1) gives a lot of help for changing settings so that you can get the most out of it but not really necessary. The main thing i'd look out for is that macs don't handle some of the TS or vent clients very well (i.e: you won't be able to use some :P)

Deathblade and skate, are you using bootcamp ?
Skateaapje
6th March 2010, 12:44
for wow? no
for the very very few programs i need windows for i installed a virtual machine, which basically allows me to run windows in a window :D
but it does run slower than when using boot camp
depends on the amount of time you're going to be using windows tbh

No, i'm not using boot camp. Most the programs I work with are mac-based and I have no real need for any Windows specific programs. If you plan on getting the mac version of microsoft office 2008 (most recent one i think) then i'll tell you now that Visual Basic Macros don't work in the Mac Excel version. It's a minor annoyance so if you really need that then i suggest you get the windows version and use boot camp, other then that I've seen no need for it :)

Question about Ventrilo and TS: Have you tried running them in CrossOver (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/crossover.html)?

No I haven't. The programs work fine, but some servers run off different clients, and afaik apple haven't purchased rights for those particular clients.

I'm so glad I've waited a notch with buying this one, because my wet dreams just came true!

he means you can't run windows software on it
I have a feeling you might have suspected that already though.
Good processor but the gpu is still uber crap.

Virtualization.
Also you can actually dual boot it with windows but that's beside the point.
Luzinda

I don't see this as an issue. You have all the software you need on OSX. Why should it run other software? Windows does not run e.g. linux apps.
And it's SeXy, don't forget that :happy2:

virtual machines (VMware Fusion for example) are also a possibility if you don't want to bother using boot camp

Now I need a Display Port enabled graphics card for my workstation, so I can use the Cinema Display on it too.
Anyone got knowledge on these?

Well the mac osx is based on the Unix system , wich is related to the linux os , so both mac and linux are sisters, but both are way more powerful and work much more effeciëntly then windows ever can in it's current state, ive tried WoW on all 3 systems, on the same laptop, and i have to admit it ,i am very pleased on how it performs on mac (better then Windows 7 xD ), but hey am a linux fanboy, and even Linux runs WoW better , and you need emulation in linux .
But you can even run it now in the new VMware workstation or fusion. so basicly you never need a windows machine (non virtualized) ever again.

Yes, it's Freee BSD taken to a new level =)
For certain tasks I've installed VirtualBox, which is similar to VM Ware, but free. It's incredibly fast and smooth running (WinXP). More and more though, I find or make a way of doing tasks on the Mac only =)

Windows tends to allow more direct access to the hardware, and therefore gives faster performance.
